Unisex Appeal

There always comes a time when I feel like my wardrobe is in a rut, even when I have items with the tags still on hanging in my closet.  These are the times when I used to decide I needed to go shopping for more clothes since I didn’t have anything to wear, which did nothing but leave my bank account high and dry and, in another month or so, with nothing to wear.  Well, that whole “nothing to wear” feeling still happens, and I’m kind of in that rut now, but there’s no more emptying my bank account because I now shop in my boyfriend’s closet!  Borrowing from him is like getting something new – at least it is for me – and it’s fun to come up with creative ways to pair his clothes with mine.  AND even if you don’t have a boyfriend to “steal” from, there’s nothing wrong with shopping in the guy’s section of your fave stores either (I do all the time!).  So here is some inspiration on how to take your guy’s pieces and make them your own, plus my must shares below:

Must Shares

Mens S/S Deep V, lnaclothing.com, $55

His t-shirts.  There’s nothing better than a cozy, slouchy tees, especially when it comes from your boyfriend.  BUT that doesn’t mean it has to come from anyone either – buying men’s tees are a great idea.  I LOVE to borrow from my bf, but I’ve always bought my own guys shirts to layer under my blazers, cardigan, or to rock solo with tons of hardware. my fave skinny jeans, and a pair of sexy heels.

All-American-White, Bonobos.com, $88

A men’s white tee doesn’t only have to look sexy on him, it can look sexy on you too.  And I don’t just mean in the bedroom.  Pair his white button up with some perfectly tailored crop trousers for work, with your favorite jeans for day, and how about rock it as a dress for night paired with a great pair of tights.  My only tip here is to keep your bottoms fitted against this loose top – otherwise you can look sloppy and about 10 lbs. heavier.  There are ways around this if the look isn’t TOO slouchy or baggy, but I’d say stick to the fitted bottoms.

PRPS Barracuda Straight-Leg Jeans, Saks.com, $196

His jeans.  Now this can be tricky, so I only suggest this if you’re close in height and not too far off in weight, otherwise you’ll look like you’re swimming in them.  Stick to a slimmer fit since that will fit your smaller frame better.  Pair with a fitted or feminine top so you don’t look like you complete raided his closet, and add some great touches with fun shoes and accessories.

g-timeless collection. slim version, gucci.com, $895

His watch.  Large watch faces for the girls is super trendy, so why not steal from the boys?  I would suggest borrowing this look with an adjustable strap style, unless you’re buying this for yourself and can have the links removed or you and your man have similar wrist sizes.  But if you’re anything like me and have tiny wrists, borrowing from your man will be tough with a link style watch.

A*MEN by Thierry Mugler Refillable Metal Flask Eau de Toilette, Nordstrom.com, $115

His fragrance.  I’ve always loved wearing a men’s fragrance every once in awhile.  I’ve been rocking Angel for Men for years (I used to steal the samples my dad would bring home whenever he’d get his Angel refilled) and I every now and then will spritz on my man’s favorite scent (Gucci by Gucci if you must know).  Some women are worried they’ll smell too masculine by doing this, but remember this: everyone’s skin makeup and oils cause fragrances to smell different on one another so his fragrance may smell entirely different on you than it does on him.  Try scents that aren’t too musky or woodsy smelling. Instead, try something with some spice and just a hint of that manly woodsy smell.  For a list of great unisex scents, check out Who What Wear here.

Have fun borrowing from the guys.  There are so many fun pieces that you can add to your wardrobe like bowties, cuff links (if you have a french cuff shirt), sweaters and cardigans, jerseys (yes, you can even make this look super chic) – you’ll be amazed at what you can find in your guy’s closet or the men’s section of your favorite store that you can easily wear and create some fun looks with.  So try out that unisex appeal!

xoxo,

Emiko
